Using the arts in therapy

Hello! Thank you for finding your way here. I am Laurain and I offer creative psychotherapy, a talking therapy technique like counselling. You can choose, if you wish, to also use materials from a range of artforms such as
- art
- music
- words
- movement
- puppets
- sandtray
- clay.
Using the arts in therapy moves you away from everyday language and surface level thinking. You see yourself apart from your artwork. This gives you distance to engage in a therapeutic conversation with me, the therapist. You feel psychologically safe to explore difficult or painful feelings, relationships and experiences.
Using the arts in therapy can help you shift the self blaming narrative you might have carried throughout your life. You are able to explore traumatic experiences in more depth than with talking therapy alone. You can make contact with the parts of yourself that remain hidden or locked away
You do not need any prior skills or to be ‘good’ at art. You can squidge, pour, splat, scratch. The materials support you to develop your own language to explore your world deeply and with purpose. I sit in the space with you, so you feel able to bring what you need to, whether it’s art, talking, deep emotion or silence. I can support you to explore the feelings that lie underneath these responses.
